Abd Tahrani

Abd Tahrani is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinician Scientist at the University of Birmingham, and a Honorary Consultant and the lead for weight management research and diabetic neuropathy services at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, UK. He gained MD in 1998, MRCP (UK) in 2003, MMedSci in 2008, CCT in Diabetes & Endocrinology in 2012 and a PhD in 2012.

Dr. Tahrani has published over 80 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and in excess of 100 abstracts. He was invited to speak in the leading national and international conferences in the fields of Obesity, Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Sleep medicine including Endo, the ADA, SLEEP, NeuroDiab, the YDF, the BES, The World Obesity Federation SCOPE school, the EASDec, the RCP (London), the RCSP (Glasgow), the Greek Obesity Society and other conferences in Asia and Europe.

His main research themes are: obesity management and treatment (including bariatric surgery), the metabolic consequences of sleep-related disorders, the pathogenesis of diabetes-related microvascular complications (particularly neuropathy and nephropathy), and the pharmacology of type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Tahrani has won several awards including SCOPE National Fellow from the World Obesity Federation in 2014, The Diabetes UK best primary care poster award 2014, NIHR Clinician Scientist award in 2013, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Sleep Disordered Breathing investigator of the year award in 2013, The Sanofi Aventis Clinical Excellence Award in 2009, the Society for endocrinology presentations award 2009, and a NIHR personal fellowship in 2008 amongst others. He was also nominated to the Nick Hales young investigator award by Diabetes UK.

He is currently the diabetes and metabolism section editor for BMC Endocrine disorders, an editorial advisor to BMC Obesity and the Editor-in-Chief for European Endocrinology.  He was the editorial consultant for the type 1 diabetes module of the American College of Physicians. He is a grant reviewer to several NIHR grant streams, the Hong Kong research council, Diabetes UK, The Novo Nordisk Research Foundation, the MRC, and the BBSRC amongst others. Dr Tahrani is a regular peer reviewer to several leading journals including the Lancet, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Annals of internal Medicine, BMJ, JACC, Diabetes care, and Diabetologia and many others.

Dr. Tahrani and has served on the clinical committee of the Society of Endocrinology and as an expert advisor to NICE.
